AsterCorp's decision to build the space elevator on the coast of Manta immediately caused mega corporations interested in space travel/colonization to descend upon the city. Manta's small city government was quickly overshadowed by the influence of various mega corporations. However, the government does still exist, however at this point it is little more than a puppet for the corporations. Bribery is common among the government officials, and corporations compete to maintain control over the government. Though things like government social services have been made unnecessary, due to corporations being able to do it better, the government still maintains the ability to pass regulations. It's pretty well known within Manta that you can tell which corporation has control over the government any given week by which regulations are proposed. The government is yet another tool for the larger corporations to use in order to benefit themselves or harm their competitors.
